Pretty Occasional Chair
Overview
Occasional chair in leather with a modern vibe. It lends itself perfectly to either home settings or contract-project premises.
Pretty is a modern small occasional chair in leather with a cocooning design. It is a versatile piece of furnishing which will fit perfectly into any setting — a bedroom, lounge and even a hotel lobby. This downsized armchair exudes a laid-back contemporary vibe. Although it looks rigid, the shell is, in reality, highly comfortable. Pretty was designed to pair harmoniously with all the seating systems from the Gamma collection.
Design Aesthetic: Cocooning Modernism
The Pretty’s defining character is described as cocooning — a design quality that implies enclosure, shelter, and envelopment. Where the Denny sofa’s design language is open and linear, and the Medea CHRBR is rounded and welcoming, the Pretty cocoons its sitter: the shell wraps around to create a sense of protected, enclosed space within the chair’s compact form.
This cocooning quality combined with the downsized scale — Pretty is explicitly a small occasional chair — creates a piece with an unusually strong presence relative to its actual footprint. At 28"W × 32"D × 28"H, the Pretty is compact by any standard, yet its enclosed shell form gives it a sculptural authority that chairs twice its size often lack.
Laid-back contemporary vibe positions the Pretty at the relaxed end of Gamma’s contemporary spectrum — not as formal or architectural as some of their other armchairs, but as a piece that invites you to sink in and stay a while, despite its compact dimensions.
Residential + Contract Versatility
Like the Medea CHRBR, the Pretty is explicitly positioned for both residential and contract markets — a hotel lobby and a bedroom mentioned in the same breath as equally valid settings. This dual-market positioning is reflected in its construction: the hardwood frame and reinforced elastic webbing seat suspension are specification-grade, while the leather shell and cocooning design aesthetic are luxury residential in character. The result is an occasional chair that reads as premium and design-forward in a home, and durable enough for the repeated use of a hotel installation.
Construction Details
Frame: Hardwood — a solid hardwood structural frame forming the shell of the chair. The frame is covered in polyurethane, meaning the hardwood structure is not visible: it is padded with polyurethane foam on the outside and then upholstered in leather, creating the seamless shell form.
Seat suspension: Reinforced elastic webbing — the same high-quality suspension system used in the Denny sofa and Medea. Despite the Pretty’s compact, apparently rigid appearance, the reinforced elastic webbing provides the responsive, comfortable support that explains the chair’s stated paradox (looks rigid, feels comfortable).
Seat cushion: Loose cushion in polyurethane covered with wadding — a removable seat cushion (loose, not fixed) sitting atop the upholstered frame. The loose cushion is a premium detail: it can be removed, rotated, or eventually replaced independently of the frame, and it provides a softer, more lofty surface than a fixed cushioned seat. The wadding cover over the polyurethane core creates the soft, rounded top surface visible in the seat.
Frame covering: Polyurethane — the hardwood shell frame is wrapped in polyurethane before leather upholstery is applied. This creates the seamless, monolithic leather shell appearance — no visible wood edges, no visible transitions, just a continuous leather surface from seat to back to arms.
Legs: Wood legs, 3cm / 1" height — the Pretty sits on very low wood legs, barely lifting the shell off the floor. This near-floor stance reinforces the cocooning quality: the chair reads as grounded, settled, close to the earth. The 1" leg height is the lowest of any seating piece reviewed in this series — a deliberate design choice that emphasizes the shell’s enclosing form and creates a horizontal, floor-hugging presence.
Stitching: CUC 503 — the same stitching specification as the Medea, confirming a consistent artisanal edge-finishing treatment across Gamma’s Gamma Collection leather pieces.
Several observations about these dimensions:
28"W × 28"H — the same in both dimensions. Like the BDI Terrace end table’s perfect cube form, the Pretty’s width and height being identical creates a satisfying geometric resolution — the front face of the chair is a perfect square. This visual proportion contributes directly to the Pretty’s compact, contained, architecturally resolved character.
16" seat height is notably low — lower than the Denny sofa’s 17" and among the lowest seat heights in this entire series. Combined with the 1" leg height, the Pretty sits very close to the ground, creating the deeply settled, cocooning posture it promises.
24" seat depth is surprisingly generous for a chair only 28" wide — the seat is nearly as deep as it is wide, creating a substantial sit that allows a fully supported, reclined posture rather than a perched one. This explains the comfort paradox: the compact exterior dimensions conceal a generously proportioned seat interior.
20" seat width — at 20" wide, the Pretty’s interior seat space is more generous than its 28" overall width suggests, because the thick leather shell walls on either side reduce the exterior footprint without shrinking the usable seating area proportionally.
